You've heard me go on and on about how fantastical a character Jack Skellington is.
Probably to the point where it's annoying.
It's just that I love him so much that just thinking about him makes me smile, even when I'm sad. He's cheered me up even when I felt like I could never be happy again. Somehow, he has the power to do that. That's how great and lovable a character he is.
So yeah, I know I'm annoying whenever I talk about him.
But here is my geek out on him.
The reason Jack's such a good character is that in a 70-minute time they show a really intricate personality for him, that doesn't even fall through the cracks as a stereotype. They show his personality ridiculously well. Not only do we learn that he's a real nice guy, but that he's also just a real gentleman and a insanely polite guy. I mean, dude, people violently obsess over you and go out of their way to bother you and stalk you a hell of a lot, and you never even make a subtle sideways remark to make them back off. Even I, an awfully polite person who's still nice to people who don't even deserve it, don't have that kind of self control.
I almost never realized how much the line, "They're TRYING to hit us!" really weighed until I got into plotline and character development, and began to develop a sort of critical mind. No, really think about how much of a big twist that is for Jack.
At the beginning of the movie, Jack is basically trapped. He's starting to get terribly uninterested in Halloween, and clearly feels bad about it. It's not simple boredom. It's absolute despair. Practically, he's going into depression.
But then he finds Christmas. Something that finally can help him and bring a new breath of fresh air to his life!! Uh... death... anyway, you can tell Christmas begins to mean a heck of a lot to him. So much so that he begins to obsess over it. And that obsession goes out of hand. But can you blame him? This is probably the first thing new to enter his life for God knows how long. He's a skeleton. He might be a thousand years old for all we know.
And so, after he found something he can be passionate about, something he loves so much, and now, with that line, "They're TRYING to hit us!" he realizes that he might be hurting people, or causing panic, it's probably unclear to him, but whatever way, he knows that it didn't come the way he intended. And GOD, upon realizing this the song "Poor Jack" became infinitely more depressing to me.
This whole plotline is just wonderfully crafted, having us get to know our main character. We know he has a lot of flaws, like accidentally getting carried away, being a bit of an idiot when it comes to noticing people's feelings, his curiousity and adventurous nature getting the best of him, and kind of- okay, not kind of, being a real big egotist sometime. But we also know that he's a real sweetheart and has good intentions. He doesn't mean any harm! Unless he doesn't mean to he only wants to scare. We also know he, like said before, is a real gentleman.
And you know whats the best about him? He admits to his mistakes, and that's more then I can say for a lot of people I've met. He gets over sadness quickly, and knows that he shouldn't blame himself all the time either, and that's more then I can say for myself, really. And even when he knows that he goes and fixes his mistakes, which is even more then I can say for myself and a rather daunting majority of the people I know. He's a good role model, but not such a good role model (talking about Disney princesses here) that he doesn't have any flaws that makes him downright unrelatable.
And people wonder why I love this guy so much?!? He's such a well-crafted character that it almost seems like he can be real. Yeah... a talking, walking, scientifically completely impossible skeleton seems more real to me then normal human princesses. I blame suspension of disbelief.
I want to hug him so hard. He's just such a freaking cutie.
Annoying rambling over.
